Verification, the step that kicks in right after setting up a Google Business Profile, is where most business owners lose the most time. Creating the profile takes a few minutes, but finishing verification can take days, sometimes weeks, depending on the business type and the method assigned.

Google’s verification help page lists six verification methods: phone/SMS, email, live video call, postcard, instant verification, and bulk verification. The business does not choose which method it gets. Google assigns a method automatically based on the business type, its history, and the account’s standing.

What Are the Verification Methods?

The six methods differ in speed and in the kind of proof they require. That difference largely decides how long a business ends up waiting.

Postcard is the most common method, and the slowest

The PIN code sent by postcard usually arrives within 14 days of the business address. The code stays valid for 30 days from the date it’s sent. If it isn’t entered within that window, a new postcard has to be requested and the process restarts. A missing address detail or an unclear building number is the most common reason a postcard never arrives.

Video verification asks for physical proof

In a live video call, a business representative is asked to show the signage, the interior, and business-specific documents on camera. Google tends to offer this method when postcard delivery hasn’t produced a reliable result, or when a faster verification path is needed. Having the signage and interior ready to show on camera when the call request arrives avoids having to schedule a second call for the same purpose.

If the business website is already verified in Search Console under the same Google account, the profile can be verified instantly. This is the fastest of the six methods, but it’s only offered to accounts that have already proven website ownership.

Bulk verification is built for multi-location businesses

Agencies or chains managing a large number of profiles under one brand can apply for bulk verification instead of verifying each location one by one.

How Long Does Verification Take?

Google states that reviewing a submitted verification request typically finishes within 5 business days. That window doesn’t include the time the method itself requires. Postcard delivery alone can take up to 14 days, so total time with the postcard method — delivery plus review — can approach three weeks.

Common Problems While Waiting

Video verification was rejectedSignage or business-specific proof wasn’t clear enough on cameraFollow the steps in the “Review issues” notice and resubmit the video
”Get verified” button reappearedThe previous verification attempt failedReapply, selecting a different method if one is available

Ways to Speed Up the Process

Most of the wait comes from the nature of the assigned method itself, and a business can’t shorten that part. A few steps do remove the delay that’s actually avoidable: entering the address and phone number correctly the first time, responding to a code or video request as quickly as possible, and not opening a second profile for the same business while waiting.

Checking whether the website is already verified in Search Console also saves time. If that link exists, Google may offer instant verification instead of postcard or video.

If Verification Is Rejected or Suspended

When a verification attempt fails, the “Get verified” button reappears on the profile screen. That’s the signal that a new verification attempt needs to be started. Video verification also produces a “Review issues” notice; the listed gaps need to be addressed before the video is resubmitted.

In some cases, Google asks for more information, which means updating the business details (address, category, contact info) on the profile. If any of the setup rules covered in What Is Google Business Profile? were broken (a business name with a slogan, a virtual office address), verification fails again on the same attempt. The actual fix belongs at the setup stage, not the verification stage.

Common Mistake

The most common mistake is waiting past the 30-day validity window when the PIN code hasn’t arrived. Once the window closes, the code becomes invalid, and a new postcard has to be requested from scratch, stretching the entire process by weeks. If the code hasn’t arrived within 10-14 days, requesting a new one early is worth doing.

The second mistake is opening a second profile for the same business while the first is still waiting on verification. Google can flag this as a duplicate or suspicious profile, which extends the review for both the new and the original listing.

Summary

Google Business Profile verification runs through one of six methods, and Google — not the business — decides which one applies. The review itself typically takes about 5 business days, but with methods like postcard, the real delay comes from the code reaching the address. The process itself can’t be shortened, but entering accurate information, responding quickly, and avoiding a duplicate profile removes the part of the delay that is avoidable.
